BREAKING: 49 Dead In Indonesian Plane Crash


UPDATE: At least 49 people are dead after a plane crash in a residential neighborhood near the city of Medan in Indonesia.  The aircraft went down with 12 military personnel on board shortly after taking off.

Thirty-eight bodies have been recovered from the crash site, said Zulkifli, an official from the Indonesian Red Cross who goes by only one name.

It was unclear what caused the disaster.

The aircraft was built in the United States int he 1960s and had passed inspection and was cleared to fly before it took off from Soewondo Air Force Base.

Twenty people are reported dead in a military plane crash in Indonesia according to CNN affiliate Trans 7 TV.

The plane, a C-130 Hercules aircraft went down in Medan the capital of the North Sumatra providence, according to Indonesian military spokesman, Maj. Gen. Fuad Basya.

Local television broadcast images of people gathered around the plane’s burning wreckage in what appeared to be a residential area.

Basya said it was unclear whether the five bodies that had so far been recovered were all of people who had been on the plane.
