CIA Director John Brennan: ‘Iran Is Still a State Sponsor of Terrorism’

CIA Director John Brennan gave an exclusive interview to Chris Wallace on “Fox News Sunday” today in which he shared insight on the ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran, the fight against ISIS and more.

“The [Iranian] nuclear program is one issue that we’re hoping to be able to halt. But also, we see that Iran is still a state sponsor of terrorism,” Brennan said.

“There are a number of things that the United States has available to it to prevent Iran from getting a bomb. President Obama has made it very clear that we are going to prevent Iran from having that type of nuclear weapon that they were going on the track to obtain. So if they decide to go down that route, they know that they will do so at their peril.”

Wallace pointed out that there have been intelligence shortcomings in the past and Iran has repeatedly fooled the U.S. with its development of nuclear sites.

Brennan asserted that we’ve “gone to school” on some of those developments over the last decade, so that we can now have a better plan and an opportunity to verify some of the things that they are saying that they’re going to do and not do.

“I am confident that our intelligence capabilities are sufficiently robust that we have a good understanding of what the Iranian nuclear program entails,” Brennan said.

As for the fight against the Islamic State, Brennan said that ISIS’s momentum inside of Iraq and Syria has been blunted and stopped.

“This is a phenomenon that we’re going to have to deal with,” Brennan acknowledged. “And I do think over the next decade, this is going to be a long, hard fight.”

He asserted that radical Islam is a twisted, perverted vision of the religion.

“It is a corruption of the Islamic faith. It is a distortion of it. It does not represent the Muslim community or Islam,” Brennan said.

“They’re violent terrorists who misrepresent what the Islamic religion is about.”
