I will update when I get the full video, but I was in tears over the great strength and forgiveness expressed by the families. It was one of the most affecting court moments I have ever seen and felt.
Some did not speak. But the daughter of Ethel Lance started it with saying that she forgave him, asking God to have mercy on his soul. “I will never be able to hold her again, but I forgive you”. As she cried through her tears, you could see the face of the killer, and he did not expect those words. Anthony Thompson, son of Myra Thompson, told Roof to give his life to Christ and asked for his conversion. “Take this opportunity to repent. Give your life to the one who matters the most”.
It says a lot about the faith of the families and the victims that they were able to do this.
Several family members in turn echoed her words, and thanked the judge for giving them the opportunity to speak. The judge said he did it because Charleston needed it.
