Patrick Zeigler used to lie awake imagining how he might have escaped being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Maybe he would have bumped into an old buddy, or got stuck in traffic, or run an errand. Anything that would have changed the course of Nov. 5, 2009.
He’s accepted, if not embraced, the moment that made him the man he is now: a husband, a dad. And come Friday, the recipient of a Purple Heart.
Zeigler, 34, was one of the most seriously wounded in the 2009 Fort Hood shootings, in which 13 were killed and more than 30 were hurt. On Friday, he will return to Fort Hood where, in a ceremony on the post in Killeen, officials will present Purple Heart medals to the wounded and the families of those who died.
Zeigler said he feels the tribute is especially important for the 13 families of those who died.
“I feel for them. I think about them all the time,” he said. “I’m just glad for them that they get this recognition and honor.” More
