The First lady Melania Trump speaks at a luncheon for the spouses of governors who are attending a meeting at the White House.
In her first public speech of 2018, Melania praises children across the US ‘using their voices to try to create change’, following the Florida school shooting in which 17 people were killed. Speaking about the massacre for the first time, the first lady said of the child activists: ‘They’re our future and they deserve a voice.’

Speaking at a luncheon for governors’ spouses in the East Room of the White House, the first lady addressed cyberbullying, the opioid crisis and finished off with some powerful comments in response to the recent shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
“It is important that, as adults, we take the lead and the responsibility in helping our children manage the many issues they are facing today,” Mrs. Trump told her guests.
“In my year as first lady, I have also learned that is often times after a tragedy that you see the strength and resilience of the human spirit. I have been heartened to see children across this country using their voices to speak out and try to create change. They are our future and they deserve a voice.” More
