Mother Seeks Revenge After School Has Son Arrested And Kicked Out
In 2013, Tanya Lardieri’s son, Jared Marcum, was charged with obstruction of justice after he refused to turn his t-shirt inside out on school property. Now, Tanya is seeking revenge after the school pressed charges against her son and kicked him out.
The shirt was an un-alarming olive green tee-shirt bearing the letters “NRA” in black, the words “PROTECT YOUR RIGHT,” an image of a hunting rifle, and the official NRA logo, which has an eagle and two cross firearms, according to IJ Review.
Jared was approached during his lunch by a teacher who informed him that the t-shirt was against the school’s dress code policy and instructed him to turn the shirt inside out or be suspended. Jared explained that he was simply exercising his constitutional right of free speech and would not be turning his shirt inside out, as it was not inappropriate.
It was at that point that the school believed that Jared was being defiant and contacted the police.
“When the police came, I was still talking and telling them that this was wrong, that they cannot do this, it’s not against any school policy,” Jared explained, according to IJ Review. “The officer, he told me to sit down and be quiet. I said, ‘No, I’m exercising my right to free speech.”
That was when the teenager was suspended and removed from school.
Tanya isn’t going to let their story end there. On behalf of her son, she is suing the Logan County Board of Education for allegedly violating her son’s constitutional rights. According to West Virginia Gazette, “The lawsuit seeks $200,000 in compensatory damages and $250,000 in punitive damages.” It also claims that the shirt complied with the county and school district’s dress code policies.
It seems that this t-shirt may not have been worth the commotion the school has caused over such a ridiculous item. There was nothing inappropriate about the shirt, but the teacher’s reaction was a bit extreme — must be a liberal.
