PC Police Strike Again ➠ This Fruit Basket Is Racist ➠ Can You See Why?
Band members pose with their “racially offensive” gift.
The political correctness police have struck again, and this time, it’s over a fruit basket gift from some band members in Houston, Texas. The basket was given to a rival team as a gift and has caused some to ponder whether it’s racist, and no, this isn’t a joke.
There are seven band members firmly in the sights of the “racially offended.” The students at Atascocita High School decided to give a fruit basket as a gift to a rival school to show solidarity and good sportsmanship. The gift basket was presented to their counterparts in the Summer Creek High School band on the field before a varsity game last Friday.
“We didn’t do anything wrong,” said flutist Carolina Andaverde. “We wouldn’t do that because we know better than that. Our parents raised us better. We weren’t being racist towards them (Summer Creek). If they took it that way, we’re sorry. We didn’t mean any harm,” Andaverde said.
“It’s just not fair, not fair. They’re good kids with good heads on their shoulders,” said Hector Andaverde, Carolina’s father.
Senior Alyssa Taylor said, “I’m mixed (race). I don’t take offense to that. How can someone else take offense?”
Perhaps the contents of the gift basket will help shed some light on the racism allegations. The basket was Halloween themed and was decorated as such. It included assorted candies, a coconut, some watermelon flavored gum, and a small watermelon.
Humble Independent School District released the following statement:
It is a tradition for student representatives of competing schools to exchange gifts on the field at varsity football games. On Friday, students from one school presented students from the other school with a watermelon, a pineapple, a coconut, and watermelon gum. Today, school administrators conducted an investigation and after considering the totality of the circumstances, determined that the gift was inappropriate and lacked good sportsmanship. Atascocita High School will not tolerate racial insensitivity.
Personally, I am still grappling with what was so racist about the gift basket, as I’m sure many others are as well. Before we know it, everything watermelon will be banned. It’s a ridiculous world we live in when you can’t give a gift without having to consider if any items within it could somehow be called “racist.”
