After being jailed for sticking to her Christian principles and refusing to sign marriage certificates for same-sex couples, Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis sat down with Fox News’ Megyn Kelly and explained why she doesn’t plan on taking the easy way out by resigning.

At one point during the Wednesday night interview, Kelly asked Davis why she wouldn’t consider stepping down from her clerkship amid rising legal issues.

“If I resign, I lose my voice,” Davis said. “Why should I have to quit a job that I love and that I’m good at?”

After her release from jail and a strong show of support from GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, Davis said she received both words of encouragement and hate mail.

“I guess it just depends what side of the argument you’re on as to whether you treat me good or you treat me bad, or if you think I’m a villain or if you think I’m just someone that God is using,” Davis told Kelly.

Davis also explained that her decision to deny same-sex marriage licenses was one that she didn’t take lightly. She understood from the beginning that it would probably result in a media frenzy and potential consequences, such as jail.

“It’s never been a gay or lesbian issue for me,” Davis said. “It has been about upholding the word of God and how God defined marriage from the very beginning of time.”

 

 

Another source of Davis’ frustration is the fact that she asked for an accommodation for her religious beliefs — even going as far as writing letters to all of the legislators in her state. Even with her extraordinary efforts, she was denied.

Huckabee echoed the same sentiment in his recent defense of Davis.

“We made accommodation to the Fort Hood shooter to let him grow a beard. We made accommodations to the detainees at Gitmo,” Huckabee said. “You’re telling me that you cannot make an accommodation for an elected Democrat county clerk?”
